Small Star, Big Change for IDs
1/4/14

Posted by ANDALUSIA STAR NEWS

A small emblem added to Alabama Identification cards and driver licenses will have a big impact on what people can do over the next few years.

Beginning Dec. 1, new regulations will require Alabama citizens born after Dec. 1, 1964, to obtain a STAR ID in order to, among other things, board a domestic flight.

The new regulations bring Alabama in compliance with the REAL ID Act of 2005, a set of anti-terror laws passed by Congress.

Covington County Probate Judge Ben Bowden said the effect the regulations will have on air travel is likely the most significant part of the change for Alabama residents.

Tag Customers 'Online,' Not 'In-Line'
11/2/13

The Covington County Probate Office reported more than $13,000 in tag sales through its on-line program for the last four business days of October. According to Assistant Chief Clerk Tracy Lawson, this represents 138 tags sold to 54 customers. It also represents something much more important.

Probate Office Has "Black Box" Disaster Plan
5/28/13

Posted by ANDALUSIA STAR NEWS

For Probate Judge Ben Bowden, this week’s devastation in Moore, Oklahoma is just a reminder that getting a black box for his office was a good idea. Bowden, whose father worked for EMA, said his family has always been disaster conscious. Just as he was starting to think about a disaster plan for his office two years ago, much of Tuscaloosa was demolished by a killer tornado. Subsequently, Bowden applied for and received a $8,500 FEMA grant which he and his staff have used to prepare for a disaster.
